Ultrasound technology has been used in medicine for therapeutic purposes such as the treatment of soft tissue injuries. It was here that it made its leap into aesthetics. Soundwaves at anything above 20,000 vibrations per second — which is the threshold of human hearing, is classified as ultrasonic. It has been used for cosmetic purposes since the 1980’s.
Ultrasonic Microdermabrasion vs. Traditional Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a technique for removing the outermost layer of skin, leaving a more youthful and supple appearance. Ultrasonic Microdermabrasion is much gentler on the skin because it is a “wet” peel. The therapist controls the level of exfoliation through the use of frequency and an appropriate exfoliant for the client’s skin condition. Traditional Microdermabrasion involves the use of very fine crystals being, for the lack of a better word, “blasted” onto the skin while at the same time vacuum suction is used to remove the crystals and dead skin cells. This can be messy and in some instances leaves the skin looking flushed. Whereas not all clients are good candidates for traditional microdermabrasion, almost anyone can benefit from ultrasonic microdermabrasion, including those that have rosacea and active acne.
During the treatment, the ultrasonic spatula is drawn across the client’s skin and micro-bursting, of dead cells, occurs as a result of the vibrations. The ultrasonic waves work to emulsify and break up debris in the skins pores. For ex-foliation and cleansing, the frequency used is 28,000 vibrations per second. This pulls debris up and out of the pores to unclog them. This process is non-invasive and can be used on the most sensitive of skins.
What Are the Benefits of Ultrasonic Microdermabrasion?
Ultrasonic Microdermabrasion rejuvenates the overall appearance and health of the skin and has a number of benefits including:
